John 14:16-18 — Meaning & Reflection
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-- the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”
Jesus does not leave his people abandoned; the Spirit makes God's faithful presence a daily reality.
Background
During his farewell discourse in John's Gospel, Jesus prepares his disciples for his departure. He promises another Comforter, the Spirit of truth, who will remain with them.
Teaching
The disciples face a future they cannot yet understand, but Jesus promises they will not face it alone. The Holy Spirit is God's abiding presence, not merely a passing feeling of reassurance. His presence teaches us that belonging to Christ continues even when comfort is difficult to feel. We can ask for his help in ordinary moments, trusting that God's faithfulness is deeper than our awareness of it.
Reflect
- When do I most need to remember that Jesus has not abandoned me?
- How might I make room today to attend to the Spirit's guidance?
Prayer
Father, thank you for giving your Spirit to dwell with your people. Help me trust your presence when I feel alone and respond to your truth with obedience. Amen.
