John 10:9-11 — Meaning & Reflection

“I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

John 10:9-11 (NIV)

The Shepherd who gives his life for us can be trusted to lead us into true abundance.

Background

Jesus uses images of a sheepfold, a door, and a shepherd after the account of a healed man’s conflict with religious leaders. These images contrast his saving care with the harm done by thieves and false guides.

Teaching

As the door, Jesus is the way into salvation and the shelter of God’s care. As the good shepherd, he provides for his sheep at the cost of his own life. Abundant life is therefore not a promise of wealth or ease, but the fullness of life found in him. His self-giving love reveals that God’s care seeks our good rather than our exploitation.

Reflect

Prayer

Good Shepherd, thank you for giving your life for me. Lead me away from what destroys and teach me to receive the fullness of life in you. Amen.
