Isaiah 40:28-30 — Meaning & Reflection
“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;”
Our strength has limits; God's strength does not, and he generously meets us in our weakness.
Background
Isaiah 40 opens a section of comfort addressed to God's people in the setting of exile. These verses answer Israel's complaint that its way is hidden from the Lord by declaring his unfailing power and understanding.
Teaching
The Creator is not worn down by the burdens that exhaust us. His understanding exceeds ours, and his attention does not fade when our energy does. Even youthful strength fails, so weakness is not evidence that we have failed spiritually. God invites us to receive strength as a gift rather than pretend we have none of our own limits.
Reflect
- Where am I struggling to admit that I am tired?
- How could I receive God's help rather than trying to appear self-sufficient?
Prayer
Everlasting God, I acknowledge the limits of my strength. Sustain me in my weariness and help me receive the rest and support you provide. Amen.
