Isaiah 35:3-4 — Meaning & Reflection
“Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, "Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you."”
We strengthen one another by remembering that God sees evil and comes to save.
Background
Isaiah 35 portrays a renewed wilderness and the joyful return of the redeemed to Zion. Following the judgment imagery of chapter 34, it calls God's people to encourage those weakened by fear.
Teaching
God's promise of deliverance becomes a word his people are meant to share with one another. Weak hands and trembling knees are met with encouragement rather than contempt. The language of vengeance places the setting right of wrongs in God's hands, not ours. Because he comes to save, we can offer frightened people patient companionship and grounded hope.
Reflect
- Where do I need to hear God's encouragement in my own fear?
- Whom could I strengthen today through a gentle word or practical help?
Prayer
Lord, steady me where fear has weakened my courage. Help me leave judgment in your hands and become a faithful source of encouragement to someone else. Amen.
