Ezra 3:11 — Meaning & Reflection
“With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the Lord : "He is good; his love to Israel endures forever." And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord , because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid.”
We can praise God at the foundation, before the work is finished and the future is clear.
Background
After returning from exile, the Jewish community lays the foundation of the rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. The surrounding verses describe both joyful shouting and the weeping of older people who had seen the former temple.
Teaching
The people praise God’s goodness while the temple is still unfinished. Their hope rests in his enduring mercy, not in the completion of their work. The mingling of joy and grief reminds us that renewal does not erase every sorrow. God welcomes thanksgiving that rises from a heart still carrying loss.
Reflect
- What small beginning can I thank God for today?
- How can I bring both my gratitude and my grief into worship?
Prayer
Faithful God, I thank you for beginnings that are easy to overlook. Receive my joy and sorrow together, and help me trust your enduring mercy. Amen.
