Ezekiel 37:4-6 — Meaning & Reflection

“Then he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones and say to them, 'Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD ! This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD .' "”

Ezekiel 37:4-6 (NIV)

What looks beyond restoration to us is not beyond the life-giving power of God.

Background

In Ezekiel's vision of the valley of dry bones, God commands the prophet to speak to lifeless remains. The chapter later identifies the bones as the house of Israel, whose people feel their hope has perished.

Teaching

The dry bones portray a people unable to restore themselves. God's word and life-giving breath accomplish what human effort cannot, revealing him as the Lord. This promise concerns Israel's restoration, not a guarantee that every personal dream will be revived. Yet it teaches us to place even our deepest hopelessness before the God who gives life.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord, I place my exhausted hopes before your life-giving power. Help me listen to your word and trust the renewal you choose to bring. Amen.
