Daniel 2:20-22 — Meaning & Reflection
“and said: "Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.”
The darkness that limits our understanding never limits God's wisdom.
Background
Daniel offers this praise after God reveals Nebuchadnezzar's dream and its interpretation to him in a night vision. The revelation follows prayer by Daniel and his companions when Babylon's wise men face execution.
Teaching
Daniel receives the answer as a gift and turns first to worship rather than self-congratulation. Wisdom and power belong to God, whose authority exceeds that of every earthly ruler. His knowledge reaches into what remains hidden from us, though he does not promise to reveal everything we want to know. We can ask for wisdom with humility and face uncertainty without assuming that God is uncertain too.
Reflect
- Where do I need to exchange anxious speculation for prayerful dependence on God's wisdom?
- How can I give God credit for understanding or help I have received?
Prayer
God of wisdom, I praise you for seeing what I cannot see. Give me the understanding I need and the humility to trust you with what remains hidden. Amen.
