Ezekiel 34:11-12 — Meaning & Reflection
“" 'For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness.”
When God's people are scattered and neglected, he promises to seek them with a shepherd's care.
Background
Ezekiel 34 condemns Israel's shepherds, its leaders, for feeding themselves while neglecting the flock. God then promises to seek his scattered sheep and care for them himself.
Teaching
The Lord sees those who have been neglected, exploited, or driven away. His response is not indifference but personal, searching care. Christians recognize this shepherding love in Jesus, the Good Shepherd who gives his life for the sheep. Receiving his care also teaches us to notice those whom others overlook.
Reflect
- Where do I need to trust that God sees me and has not forgotten me?
- Who around me needs the attentive care of someone willing to notice and draw near?
Prayer
Lord, help me trust your shepherding care when I feel scattered or alone. Make me attentive to people who need the kindness I have received from you. Amen.
