Ezekiel 11:19-20 — Meaning & Reflection
“I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God.”
God restores his people by giving them hearts that can respond to his love.
Background
Ezekiel ministered among Judean exiles in Babylon. Within a vision concerning Jerusalem's judgment, God promises to gather his scattered people and renew their hearts.
Teaching
A heart of stone pictures resistance to God, while a heart of flesh is living and responsive. God promises more than a change of location or circumstance; he promises inward renewal. The purpose of this gift is a shared life of obedience and belonging to him. We therefore seek transformation not merely through stronger resolve, but through dependence on God's renewing grace.
Reflect
- Where has my heart become resistant to God's direction?
- How might a more responsive heart change the way I treat someone today?
Prayer
Lord, soften the places in me that resist your love and truth. Give me a willing heart that delights in belonging to you and walking in your ways. Amen.
