Exodus 14:13-14 — Meaning & Reflection
“Moses answered the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still."”
When fear insists everything depends on us, faith remembers that deliverance belongs to the Lord.
Background
With Pharaoh’s army approaching and the sea before them, the Israelites fear that their escape will end in death. Moses calls them to trust God before the Lord commands them to move forward through the sea.
Teaching
Moses directs the people away from panic and toward the God who has brought them out of Egypt. Their rescue will be God’s achievement, not a victory won by their military strength. This call to stillness is not a command to remain passive in every crisis, since God soon tells them to advance. Faith quiets our frantic self-reliance so that we can respond to God with obedient courage.
Reflect
- What fear is making me act as though everything depends on me?
- What would it look like to combine quiet trust with faithful action today?
Prayer
Lord, quiet the fear that drives me to control what I cannot. Help me trust your power and act with courage when you call me forward. Amen.
