Esther 4:15-16 — Meaning & Reflection
“Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: "Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish."”
Courage can acknowledge the danger, gather support, and still choose the faithful next step.
Background
Responding to Mordecai’s appeal, Esther asks the Jews in Shushan to fast with her before she approaches the king. She resolves to enter his presence despite the law against coming uninvited.
Teaching
Esther does not pretend that obedience will be safe. She asks her community to share in fasting, refusing to face the crisis as an isolated individual. Her resolve shows a willingness to risk her own security for the lives of others. For Christians, her example encourages costly love and dependence on God without demanding a guaranteed outcome.
Reflect
- What faithful action have I delayed because I cannot guarantee its outcome?
- Whom could I invite to support me as I face a difficult responsibility?
Prayer
Lord, I bring you my fear of what faithfulness might cost. Give me courage to love others and humility to receive support along the way. Amen.
