Esther 4:14 — Meaning & Reflection

“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?"”

Esther 4:14 (NIV)

The place we occupy may become a doorway to serve others with costly courage.

Background

After Haman secures a decree threatening the Jews throughout the Persian Empire, Mordecai urges Queen Esther to appeal to the king. Approaching the king without being summoned could cost her life.

Teaching

Mordecai challenges Esther to see that her royal position carries responsibility, not guaranteed safety. His question leaves room for uncertainty while calling her to act for her people. Though God is not explicitly named in Esther, the story invites reflection on his providential care. We need not know the full purpose of our circumstances to use our influence for the good of others.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord, open my eyes to the people I can serve where you have placed me. Give me courage to act faithfully without needing to understand your whole plan. Amen.
