Deuteronomy 7:9 — Meaning & Reflection

“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.”

Deuteronomy 7:9 (NIV)

Our love for God answers a faithfulness that began long before us and reaches far beyond us.

Background

Moses reminds Israel that God chose and redeemed them because of his love and his oath to their ancestors, not their greatness. He then calls them to recognize God’s covenant faithfulness and respond with obedience.

Teaching

God’s faithfulness is not a passing mood but a lasting commitment to his covenant. The picture of a thousand generations emphasizes the far-reaching endurance of his mercy. Love and obedience belong together, not as a way of purchasing God’s favor but as a response to his gracious initiative. We honor his faithfulness by trusting him enough to follow his ways.

Reflect

Prayer

Faithful God, thank you for loving before I knew how to respond. Let my gratitude become steady obedience and a gracious witness to those who follow me. Amen.
