Deuteronomy 6:4-7 — Meaning & Reflection

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

Deuteronomy 6:4-7 (NIV)

Love for God takes root in the heart and grows through the ordinary rhythms of each day.

Background

As Israel prepares to enter the promised land, Moses calls the people to wholehearted loyalty to the Lord. This passage, known as the Shema, joins the confession of God’s oneness with daily remembrance and teaching of his commands.

Teaching

God calls for a love that gathers up our whole life rather than occupying one small corner of it. His words are to dwell in our hearts before they become instruction on our lips. Everyday moments at home, on the road, at bedtime, and in the morning become opportunities to remember him. Jesus identifies this wholehearted love for God as the first and great commandment.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord, draw my whole heart into love for you. Let your word shape my daily habits and the way I share life with others. Amen.
