Acts 4:31-33 — Meaning & Reflection

“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all.”

Acts 4:31-33 (NIV)

The Spirit strengthens us not only to speak boldly, but also to love generously.

Background

Acts, traditionally attributed to Luke, describes the Jerusalem believers praying after Peter and John were threatened by religious authorities. Their prayer for boldness is followed by renewed witness and a portrait of shared community life.

Teaching

God answers their prayer by filling them with the Holy Ghost, empowering them to speak despite opposition. The same community that proclaims Jesus also shares its possessions with open hands. Their unity does not replace the message of the resurrection; it gives that message a visible expression. God's grace draws us beyond private comfort into courageous witness and practical care.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord, fill me with your Spirit and give me courage to bear witness to Jesus. Open my hands and heart so that your grace becomes visible in how I love others. Amen.
