Acts 17:24-27 — Meaning & Reflection
“"The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.”
The God who needs nothing gives us every breath and invites us to seek him.
Background
Paul speaks at the Areopagus in Athens after encountering the city's many objects of worship. He presents God as Creator and giver of life before calling his listeners to repentance in light of the resurrection.
Teaching
God cannot be contained in a building or sustained by human offerings. Every breath comes from him, and all peoples share a common origin under his sovereign care. His greatness does not make him remote: Paul declares that he is near to each of us. We seek him not to supply something he lacks, but to know the One on whom we already depend.
Reflect
- How would remembering that every breath is God's gift change my attitude today?
- Where have I treated God as distant rather than turning toward him?
Prayer
Creator God, thank you for the life and breath you freely give me. Teach me to seek you humbly and to honor every person as someone who depends on your care. Amen.
