1 Chronicles 29:11-13 — Meaning & Reflection

“Yours, O Lord , is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord , is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.”

1 Chronicles 29:11-13 (NIV)

Gratitude grows when we remember that everything we hold already belongs to God.

Background

Near the end of David’s reign, he offers this prayer before the assembled people after generous gifts are gathered for the temple Solomon will build.

Teaching

David turns attention from human generosity to the greatness of God. Wealth, honor, and strength are gifts to receive, not grounds for boasting. Because everything belongs to God, we can hold our resources with humility and share them freely. Praise reminds us that our deepest security rests in the Giver rather than his gifts.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord, I thank you for the gifts I so easily take for granted. Help me hold them humbly and use them to honor you. Amen.
