Song of Solomon 8:6-7 — Meaning & Reflection
“Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned.”
Love worthy of our trust seeks lasting faithfulness, not possession, performance, or a price.
Background
Near the close of the Song, these verses describe love’s strength through images of a seal, death, fire, and overwhelming waters. The seal evokes belonging and commitment, while the final comparison declares that love cannot be purchased.
Teaching
This poetry portrays love as powerful, enduring, and beyond material value. Its fierce language conveys the intensity of devoted love, not permission for coercion or harmful jealousy. Such love calls for faithful commitment rather than attempts to buy or control another person. Christians can also see here an echo of God’s steadfast love, freely given and supremely revealed in Christ.
Reflect
- How can I express faithful love without trying to control another person?
- Where do I need to stop treating love as something I must purchase or earn?
Prayer
Lord, shape my love into something faithful, generous, and free from control. Help me rest in your steadfast love and reflect it in my relationships. Amen.
