Psalm 73:23-26 — Meaning & Reflection
“Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
When strength and understanding fail, God still holds you and remains your lasting treasure.
Background
Psalm 73, attributed to Asaph, wrestles with envy at the prosperity of the wicked. After entering God's sanctuary and gaining a different perspective, the psalmist recognizes that fellowship with God is his greatest good.
Teaching
The psalmist discovers that his confusion has not erased God's sustaining presence. God holds him, guides him, and offers a hope extending beyond his present struggle. Calling God his portion means finding his lasting inheritance and deepest good in God Himself. Even when physical and emotional strength diminish, God's faithfulness remains the foundation of his life.
Reflect
- Where has comparison made it difficult for me to recognize God's goodness?
- What would it mean to treasure God even when other sources of strength fail?
Prayer
Lord, I confess that I often measure my life against what others have. Hold my hand, guide my heart, and teach me to find my deepest joy in You. Amen.
