Psalm 5:11-12 — Meaning & Reflection

“But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you. For surely, O Lord , you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.”

Psalm 5:11-12 (NIV)

Joy takes root when our refuge is God's faithful presence rather than the absence of trouble.

Background

Psalm 5 is a prayer attributed to David, who brings his requests to God in the morning and seeks guidance amid deceitful enemies. It closes by asking for joy and protection for those who take refuge in the Lord.

Teaching

The psalm joins trust, love, and joy in a life turned toward God. His favor is pictured as a shield, expressing the security found in His care. Such confidence does not deny the enemies and dangers named earlier in the prayer. It allows us to seek God's righteous way and rejoice in Him while we still need protection.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord, I take refuge in You amid the pressures I cannot control. Guide me in Your righteous way and awaken joy in me as I remember Your faithful care. Amen.
