Psalm 3:3-5 — Meaning & Reflection
“But you are a shield around me, O Lord ; you bestow glory on me and lift up my head. To the Lord I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill. Selah I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.”
The God who hears our cries can sustain us through the night before our troubles are resolved.
Background
The superscription identifies Psalm 3 with David's flight from his son Absalom. Surrounded by enemies and claims that God will not help him, the psalmist confesses God's protection and sustaining care.
Teaching
David turns from the voices of his enemies to the Lord who protects him and restores his dignity. His cry is personal, and his confidence rests in being heard by God. Sleep and waking become ordinary signs of divine sustaining care amid extraordinary danger. We too may receive rest as a gift before we see a change in our circumstances.
Reflect
- What accusing or fearful voice do I need to bring before God today?
- Where can I recognize God's sustaining care even though my circumstances remain difficult?
Prayer
Lord, I bring You the fears that bend my head and weary my mind. Lift my eyes toward You and help me receive the rest You offer today. Amen.
