Proverbs 3:7-8 — Meaning & Reflection
“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.”
Humility makes room for God’s wisdom, turning us from harmful paths toward the wholeness his ways nurture.
Background
These verses follow the call to trust the Lord rather than lean on one’s own understanding. Their bodily imagery describes the life-giving value of reverence and turning away from evil.
Teaching
Being wise in our own eyes closes us to guidance and correction. Reverence for God opens a different path, one that includes actively leaving evil behind. The language of bodily health portrays the restoring benefits of wise living, not a guarantee that faithful people never become ill. God calls us to trust his goodness beyond the limits of our own judgment.
Reflect
- Where might confidence in my own judgment be keeping me from correction?
- What harmful pattern is God calling me to turn away from?
Prayer
Lord, free me from the pride that mistakes my perspective for complete wisdom. Help me turn from evil and trust the goodness of your ways. Amen.
