Proverbs 27:17 — Meaning & Reflection
“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”
God often deepens our wisdom through friends who love us enough to speak honestly.
Background
Proverbs 27 belongs to the sayings of Solomon copied by the men of Hezekiah, as introduced in Proverbs 25:1. This chapter includes several observations about friendship, counsel, and honest correction.
Teaching
The image of sharpening suggests that friendship can make us more discerning and prepared for life. We grow through thoughtful conversation, wise encouragement, and correction offered with care. This is not permission to be harsh, but an invitation to seek another person’s good. God can use faithful friends to reveal what we cannot easily see in ourselves.
Reflect
- Whose wise counsel have I been reluctant to receive?
- How can I help a friend grow while remaining gentle and humble?
Prayer
Lord, give me a teachable heart and friends who help me grow in wisdom. Let my words strengthen others rather than wound them. Amen.
