Philippians 3:13-14 — Meaning & Reflection
“Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
Following Christ means letting neither past failure nor past achievement become the place where we stop.
Background
Earlier in Philippians 3, Paul sets aside confidence in his religious credentials in order to gain Christ. He then describes the Christian life as a continuing pursuit, acknowledging that he has not yet reached its fullness.
Teaching
Paul’s forward movement grows from belonging to Christ, not from trying to earn God’s acceptance. Forgetting what lies behind does not require denying our history or avoiding needed repentance. It means refusing to let either regret or pride govern our pursuit of Jesus. God calls us toward the fullness of life in Christ, giving purpose to the next faithful step.
Reflect
- What past failure or achievement am I allowing to define my present walk with Christ?
- What small, faithful step can I take toward Jesus today?
Prayer
Lord, help me learn from my past without making my home there. Keep my heart turned toward Christ and give me courage for the next faithful step. Amen.
