Philippians 1:6 — Meaning & Reflection
“being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Your growth rests not on flawless effort, but on the faithfulness of the God who began his work in you.
Background
Writing from imprisonment, Paul thanks God for the Philippians and their partnership in the gospel. His confidence in this verse appears within that thankful prayer and looks ahead to the day of Jesus Christ.
Teaching
Paul sees the Philippians’ faith and gospel partnership as evidence of God’s work among them. His confidence rests in God’s faithfulness, not in their ability to make themselves complete. This promise does not make our daily choices unimportant; it gives us hope as we keep responding to grace. When growth feels slow, we can trust that God has not abandoned what he began.
Reflect
- Where have I noticed God quietly shaping my faith over time?
- How might trusting God’s faithfulness change the way I face an unfinished part of my life?
Prayer
Lord, thank you for beginning a work in me that I could never accomplish alone. Help me trust your faithfulness and respond to your grace today. Amen.
