Numbers 23:19 — Meaning & Reflection
“God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?”
God’s faithfulness rests on who he is, not on the shifting strength of our confidence.
Background
Balak, king of Moab, hires Balaam to curse Israel, but God directs Balaam to bless them instead. In his second oracle, Balaam declares that God will not reverse his declared blessing at Balak’s demand.
Teaching
Unlike people, God does not lie or abandon his word through fickleness. Here, that truth assures Israel that a hostile king cannot manipulate God into withdrawing his blessing. The passage calls us to trust what God has actually promised, not everything we wish he would do. His faithfulness gives us firm ground even when circumstances and feelings change.
Reflect
- Which promise of God can I return to when my feelings become unsettled?
- Am I trusting God’s word, or asking him to guarantee my preferred outcome?
Prayer
Faithful Lord, anchor my trust in what you have spoken. Help me release my demands and rest in the truthfulness of your character. Amen.
