Micah 7:18-20 — Meaning & Reflection
“Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. You will be true to Jacob, and show mercy to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our fathers in days long ago.”
God’s mercy is not reluctant; he delights to forgive and remains faithful to his promises.
Background
Micah closes with praise for God’s pardoning mercy after passages of judgment, lament, and hope for restoration. The final verses ground that hope in God’s ancient promises to Abraham and Jacob.
Teaching
The prophet marvels that God delights in mercy rather than holding anger forever. The image of sins cast into the sea expresses the completeness of his forgiveness. God also promises to subdue iniquity, offering hope against sin’s grip as well as its guilt. Our confidence rests in his faithful character, not in our ability to make ourselves worthy of compassion.
Reflect
- What forgiven sin am I still carrying as though God refuses to release it?
- Where do I need God’s help to overcome sin’s continuing influence?
Prayer
Merciful God, help me trust the forgiveness you give rather than keep returning to shame. Subdue what draws me away from you, and hold me in your faithful love. Amen.
