Matthew 5:14-15 — Meaning & Reflection

“"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.”

Matthew 5:14-15 (NIV)

The light Jesus gives is meant to bless others, not remain hidden.

Background

Following the Beatitudes, Jesus uses the images of salt and light to describe his disciples’ place in the world. The next verse connects their visible good works with giving glory to their heavenly Father.

Teaching

Jesus describes his followers as light with a purpose beyond themselves. Like a lamp placed where it can illuminate a house, their lives are meant to serve those around them. This is not an invitation to seek attention, but to make God’s goodness visible. Ordinary acts of honesty, compassion, and courage can help others see something of the Father’s care.

Reflect

Prayer

Father, let my life make your goodness visible without drawing glory to myself. Help me offer the light of your love wherever you place me today. Amen.
