Matthew 11:25-27 — Meaning & Reflection
“At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”
Knowing God begins with receiving what Jesus reveals, not proving how much we understand.
Background
This prayer follows Jesus’ rebuke of towns that witnessed his mighty works but did not repent. It precedes his invitation to the weary to come to him for rest.
Teaching
Jesus thanks the Father for revealing his truth to those pictured as little children. The contrast challenges self-sufficient pride rather than the thoughtful use of our minds. Knowledge of God is a gift, and the Son uniquely reveals the Father because of their intimate relationship. We approach him with receptive humility, trusting Jesus to make the Father known.
Reflect
- Where might confidence in my own understanding be making me less receptive to God?
- What am I learning about the Father through the words and actions of Jesus?
Prayer
Jesus, make the Father known to me as I listen to you. Give me a humble, receptive heart that welcomes truth as a gift rather than a possession. Amen.
