Luke 5:31-32 — Meaning & Reflection
“Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."”
You do not have to become well before coming to the Physician of your soul.
Background
After answering Jesus’ call, Levi hosts a feast where tax collectors and others share the table with him. Pharisees and scribes question the disciples about Jesus eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners.
Teaching
Jesus compares his mission to a physician’s work among those who need healing. He welcomes sinners without pretending that sin does no harm, calling them instead to repentance. His answer challenges the self-righteousness that keeps people from admitting their own need. We come to him honestly, trusting that his mercy both receives us and begins to change us.
Reflect
- What need or sin am I tempted to conceal instead of bringing to Jesus?
- How can I offer others a welcome that reflects both grace and a desire for their good?
Prayer
Jesus, I come to you with the needs I cannot heal myself. Give me courage to repent and a gracious heart toward others who need your mercy. Amen.
