Luke 2:10-14 — Meaning & Reflection

“But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."”

Luke 2:10-14 (NIV)

The joy of Christmas begins with God coming near, not with our circumstances becoming perfect.

Background

In Luke’s account of Jesus’ birth, an angel appears to shepherds watching their flocks near Bethlehem. The announcement identifies the newborn child as Saviour, Christ, and Lord, and a heavenly multitude praises God.

Teaching

The angel answers the shepherds’ fear with news of what God has done. The promised Saviour has arrived, yet the sign of his coming is a baby lying in a manger. God’s glory is revealed through astonishing humility, bringing salvation near to ordinary people. The promised peace begins in God’s reconciling work, offering hope deeper than the absence of difficulty.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for coming near in humility and love. Let the news of your birth quiet my fear and draw my heart into praise. Amen.
