Luke 19:9-10 — Meaning & Reflection
“Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."”
Jesus seeks us in our lostness, and his welcome opens the way to a changed life.
Background
In Jericho, Jesus invites himself to the home of Zacchaeus, a wealthy chief tax collector, despite the crowd’s objections. Zacchaeus responds by pledging generosity to the poor and restitution for wrongdoing.
Teaching
Jesus announces salvation in a household the crowd has dismissed as unworthy of his company. By calling Zacchaeus a son of Abraham, he affirms that this despised man is not beyond God’s covenant care. Zacchaeus’s commitments show the practical shape of repentance, not a price paid to purchase salvation. Jesus identifies his mission as seeking and saving the lost, revealing God’s initiative in bringing people home.
Reflect
- Where might receiving Jesus’ welcome lead me to make something right?
- Whom have I treated as though they were beyond the reach of God’s saving love?
Prayer
Jesus, I thank you for seeking me rather than waiting for me to make myself worthy. Let your welcome change how I use my resources and how I repair the harm I have caused. Amen.
