Lamentations 3:24-26 — Meaning & Reflection
“I say to myself, "The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him." The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord .”
When much has been lost, God himself remains a reason to hope.
Background
Lamentations mourns Jerusalem's destruction by Babylon and is traditionally associated with Jeremiah, though the book does not name its author. In chapter 3, the speaker turns from intense suffering toward hope in God's mercy and faithfulness.
Teaching
To call the Lord our portion is to recognize him as our enduring treasure and source of hope. The speaker does not deny his pain; he seeks God within it. Quiet waiting is not pretending that everything is well, but refusing to make present sorrow the final measure of God's goodness. We may seek him honestly while trusting that deliverance belongs to him.
Reflect
- What loss or uncertainty makes it difficult for me to say that the Lord is my portion?
- What might hopeful waiting look like for me today?
Prayer
Lord, be my hope when I cannot see what comes next. Help me seek you honestly and wait without surrendering my trust in your goodness. Amen.
