Judges 6:23-24 — Meaning & Reflection
“But the LORD said to him, "Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die." So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.”
God’s peace can meet us before our circumstances change and steady us for the obedience still ahead.
Background
After recognizing that he has encountered the angel of the Lord, Gideon fears for his life. God reassures him, and Gideon builds an altar called Jehovah-shalom, meaning the Lord is peace.
Teaching
God’s first word to Gideon’s terror is reassurance rather than condemnation. The altar remembers the Lord who grants peace in an encounter with his holiness. Midian’s oppression has not yet ended, and difficult obedience still awaits Gideon. God’s peace is therefore more than relief from trouble; it is security in the presence of the One who calls him.
Reflect
- Where do I need God’s reassurance amid circumstances that remain unresolved?
- How can I remember his peace when obedience feels costly?
Prayer
Lord, quiet my fear with the assurance of your presence. Help me receive your peace and carry it into the difficult responsibilities before me. Amen.
