Job 37:5 — Meaning & Reflection
“God's voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding.”
God's greatness exceeds our understanding, but our limits need not close our hearts to wonder.
Background
Near the end of his speeches, Elihu describes thunder, lightning, snow, and rain as displays of God's power. These reflections come just before the Lord answers Job out of the whirlwind in chapter 38.
Teaching
Elihu's picture of thunder reminds us that God's works surpass our ability to explain them. Yet this truth should lead us to humility, not confident claims about why another person suffers. We can acknowledge mystery without abandoning prayer or attention to what God has revealed. Wonder opens our hearts to worship when explanation reaches its limits.
Reflect
- What unanswered question do I need to hold with greater humility?
- How can I make room for wonder rather than demanding an explanation for everything?
Prayer
Almighty God, I acknowledge how little I understand of Your works. Keep my questions honest and my heart open to Your greatness. Amen.
