Job 26:14 — Meaning & Reflection
“And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power?"”
What we understand of God is only a whisper of the greatness that invites our wonder.
Background
Following Bildad's brief speech, Job describes God's power over the heavens, the waters, and the realm of the dead. He concludes that even these wonders reveal only a small portion of God's ways.
Teaching
Creation displays God's greatness without exhausting it. Job's words challenge the assumption that we can neatly explain everything God permits or does. Humility makes room for both genuine knowledge and unanswered questions. We can worship the God who reveals Himself while remembering that He remains greater than our understanding.
Reflect
- Where have I mistaken my understanding of God for the fullness of who He is?
- What ordinary sight could invite me into wonder today?
Prayer
God of wonder, I confess how quickly I try to fit You within my understanding. Teach me to receive what You reveal with gratitude and approach what I cannot grasp with humility. Amen.
