Jeremiah 9:23-24 — Meaning & Reflection
“This is what the Lord says: "Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord , who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the Lord .”
Our deepest treasure is not what we possess or accomplish, but knowing the God who delights in steadfast goodness.
Background
Jeremiah prophesied to Judah amid covenant unfaithfulness and approaching judgment. Within a chapter of lament and warning, these verses redirect boasting from human advantages to knowing the Lord.
Teaching
Wisdom, strength, and wealth cannot provide the security or worth we often ask of them. God invites us to find our confidence in knowing him, especially his lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness. This knowledge is more than religious information; it shapes what we love and how we treat others. We honor God when the qualities he delights in become the qualities we seek to practice.
Reflect
- What achievement or possession am I relying on to feel secure or significant?
- How could knowing God's character shape one decision I make today?
Prayer
Lord, loosen my attachment to the things that make me feel important. Help me find my joy in knowing you and reflecting your goodness. Amen.
