Isaiah 55:1-3 — Meaning & Reflection
“"Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.”
God offers freely what our striving cannot purchase: life nourished by his faithful love.
Background
Isaiah 55 follows promises of restoration with an invitation to receive God's abundant provision. The call to listen and live is joined to an everlasting covenant grounded in God's faithful promises to David.
Teaching
The invitation welcomes those who have nothing with which to pay. God challenges the exhausting pursuit of things that consume our resources without satisfying our deepest hunger. Coming to him includes listening, because his word directs us toward life. Christians hear this invitation fulfilled in Jesus, David's promised King, through whom God's grace is offered freely.
Reflect
- What am I pursuing that leaves my soul hungry?
- How can I make room today to listen and receive rather than strive to earn?
Prayer
Lord, I come to you with needs I cannot satisfy on my own. Teach me to receive your grace freely and find nourishment in your word. Amen.
