Hosea 6:1-3 — Meaning & Reflection
“"Come, let us return to the Lord . He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence. Let us acknowledge the Lord ; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth."”
Returning to God means seeking his presence, not merely relief from our pain.
Background
Hosea prophesied to the northern kingdom of Israel amid covenant unfaithfulness and approaching judgment. This appeal to return follows God’s withdrawal in chapter 5, while the following verses expose the people’s fleeting devotion.
Teaching
These words name God as the one who can heal and restore his wounded people. Yet the surrounding passage warns that hopeful religious language must become lasting faithfulness. Knowing the Lord means continuing toward him, not treating repentance as a quick escape from consequences. The images of dawn and rain invite confidence in his faithfulness while calling us to a love that endures.
Reflect
- Am I seeking God himself, or mainly asking him to remove discomfort?
- What would steady, sincere returning to God look like today?
Prayer
Lord, I return to you with my need and my divided heart. Heal what is broken, and teach me to seek you with a love that lasts. Amen.
