Genesis 28:15-17 — Meaning & Reflection

“I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it." He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven."”

Genesis 28:15-17 (NIV)

God’s presence can turn an unfamiliar resting place into holy ground.

Background

While traveling toward Haran after leaving his family, Jacob dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven. The Lord renews the promises given to Abraham and Isaac and assures Jacob of his presence and protection.

Teaching

Jacob discovers that God is present before he has learned to recognize him. The promise rests on God’s faithfulness, not on Jacob’s flawless character or clear understanding. His fear on waking expresses awe at encountering the holy God in an unexpected place. We too can approach ordinary, uncertain days with reverence, remembering that our awareness does not determine God’s nearness.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord, open my eyes to your presence in the places I would otherwise hurry through. Teach me to rest in your faithfulness and respond with reverence. Amen.
