Genesis 2:18 — Meaning & Reflection
“The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."”
God sees our need for companionship and invites us beyond self-sufficiency into mutual care.
Background
In Genesis's garden narrative, God names the man's solitude as not good. This declaration introduces the creation of the woman and the account of their union in marriage.
Teaching
The man's need for companionship is recognized by God before the man asks for help. The woman is a fitting partner, not a lesser human being. While this passage leads specifically to marriage, it also reminds us that human life is not designed for isolated self-sufficiency. Whether married or single, we can honor God by offering and receiving faithful care.
Reflect
- Where am I resisting the help or companionship I need?
- How can I offer meaningful presence to someone who feels alone?
Prayer
Lord, help me acknowledge my need for others without shame. Lead me into faithful relationships, and make me attentive to those who need companionship. Amen.
