Exodus 12:13 — Meaning & Reflection
“The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.”
Our deepest refuge is the mercy God provides, not the worthiness we try to prove.
Background
Before the final plague in Egypt, God instructs Israel to keep the first Passover and mark their doorposts and lintels with the lamb’s blood. This sign distinguishes the homes that will be spared when judgment falls on Egypt’s firstborn.
Teaching
The blood is a sign attached to God’s promise of protection, not a magical safeguard. Israel is called to trust his word and receive the refuge he provides. The New Testament identifies Christ as our Passover, drawing this deliverance into the story of his saving death. Our confidence rests in God’s mercy through Christ rather than in our ability to make ourselves worthy.
Reflect
- Where am I trying to earn the acceptance that God offers through Christ?
- How can gratitude for God’s mercy shape one choice I make today?
Prayer
Lord, I thank you for the mercy you have provided through Jesus Christ. Help me rest in his saving work and live today with grateful trust. Amen.
