Deuteronomy 33:26-27 — Meaning & Reflection
“"There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens to help you and on the clouds in his majesty. The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemy before you, saying, 'Destroy him!'”
Whatever lies ahead, the eternal God is a refuge whose everlasting arms do not grow weary.
Background
These verses appear in the closing praise of Moses’ blessing over Israel before his death. Jeshurun is a poetic name for Israel, and the passage celebrates God’s protection as the people prepare to enter the promised land.
Teaching
God is pictured both as the majestic helper above his people and the enduring support beneath them. Israel’s future rests not merely on its strength but on the presence of its eternal refuge. The language about destroying enemies belongs to Israel’s conquest setting, not a command to attack our personal opponents. For Christians, this passage invites trust in God’s sustaining care while following Christ’s call to love our enemies.
Reflect
- What uncertainty do I need to entrust to God’s everlasting care?
- How could finding refuge in God free me to respond to opposition without hatred?
Prayer
Eternal God, I place the uncertainties ahead of me into your care. Sustain me when I feel weak, and help me meet others with the love of Christ. Amen.
