2 Kings 6:16-17 — Meaning & Reflection
“"Don't be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." And Elisha prayed, "O Lord , open his eyes so he may see." Then the Lord opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
What frightens us is not the whole reality; God’s power exceeds what our eyes can measure.
Background
An army sent by the king of Syria surrounds Dothan to capture Elisha, whose warnings have frustrated the king’s plans against Israel. When Elisha’s servant sees the troops and becomes afraid, Elisha prays for his eyes to be opened.
Teaching
The servant’s fear arises from a real threat, but his vision of the situation is incomplete. God opens his eyes to reveal the fiery horses and chariots surrounding Elisha. This particular deliverance shows that visible danger does not define the limits of God’s power. We are invited to trust God beyond what we can see, without presuming that every danger will end in the same miraculous way.
Reflect
- Which visible difficulty is dominating my understanding of what God can do?
- How might remembering God’s power change the way I face that difficulty today?
Prayer
Lord, when fear narrows my vision, remind me that your power is greater than what I can see. Help me face real difficulties with steady trust in your care. Amen.
