1 Kings 17:13-16 — Meaning & Reflection

“Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord , the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord gives rain on the land.' " She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.”

1 Kings 17:13-16 (NIV)

God’s care reaches places of scarcity, where tomorrow’s provision is still beyond our sight.

Background

During the drought announced by Elijah, God sends him to a widow in Zarephath, outside Israel. She has only enough flour and oil for a final meal for herself and her son when Elijah brings God’s promise of provision.

Teaching

Elijah’s request rests on a specific promise from God to sustain this household through the drought. The widow responds to that word, and God faithfully preserves the flour and oil. This miracle reveals his care for vulnerable people beyond Israel’s borders; it is not a formula requiring gifts in exchange for prosperity. It invites us to trust his compassion and become attentive to neighbors facing scarcity.

Reflect

Prayer

Lord, meet me in my fear about what tomorrow may bring. Help me trust your compassion and share what I can with those in need. Amen.
